Steve Tambellini on the Oilers’ defence:
“It was part of it. I like the fact that he’s versatile and not locked in to one side. You know, our right side is pretty defined, I think, with Petry and Schultz and Potter. I’m looking for Potter, Corey to make a good step here as far as being an every day guy that we can count on because he have does have that ability. I think this acquisition just adds to that balance of puck moving and skill and we’re looking for some heaviness and difficult way that he plays.”
The right side of the Oilers’ defence has played a grand total of 179 games, an average of 59.67 each. Over on the left side, Nick Schultz has played 763. Ladislav Smid has played 409. Ryan Whitney has played 440. All three guys, if healthy, are legitimate top four defencemen.
That Tambo quote makes no sense.

Did he seriously fucking say Potter, Corey?
It’s the long-awaited confirmation that Steve Tambellini is actually a robot.
Maybe they are trying to pump Potter’s tires in an attempt to trade him, or have him picked off of waivers.
He has another season under contract after all, and probably doesn’t make the team next year.
Who says the veterans have to be balance. Equally on the left and right. You just need a combination of size, skill, meanness, offense and defence on each pairing. Potter was solid last year consistantly making nice safe short passes that some veterans don’t make regularly. I don’t see where there is a problem on our right side. Maybe we should just have all great defenders on the team. That shoot it high and hard off the glass. To bad then as we will then have the most talented bunch of forchecking forwards of any team in the Show.

Except the other thing Potter brings is an inability to play defense on the rush, which is kind of an important skill in the NHL.
I’m glad somebody has a lot of faith in Ryan Whitney’s ankle! -).
