Maybe I am late to the conversation but what qualifies as a scoring chance. Personal opinion? Shot on goal? Missed shot?
I dont know for sure – but I would say that they are always just personal opinion depending on where you are shooting from – on net/blocked/missed or whatever
Though I would say without some poor folks doing these figures we wouldnt have this frame of reference at all – so we must thank Dennis and his friends for doing these
However, and this is the only fault with these figures – it is personal opinion – to be truthful the only way you could get truly meaningful figures would be having, oh lets say a dozen different folk doing these at the same time and going back over each persons record of chances and then accepting only those records where the great majority (lets say 75%) agreed
Now I dont know about anyone else but that sounds like way too much work for every darn game – so just makes me want to thank those again that do actually do this …..
To be frank, most of the stats that the NHL counts are personal opinions and with the exception of goals and assists, most of them aren’t re-verified.
2nd assists are reportedly given away like candy, and the NHL doesn’t actually care.
Kinda like how assists in the NBA are exteremely inaccurate.
I suspected that also – unless you have half a dozen folks doing the same thing at the same time it will always be subject to inaccuracies – and are the NHL going to pay for all these stats guys ??
Some thoughts –
The PP looks like its struggling and has been for a few games – though 14 and 93 usually do OKish
those last 3 chances threw the figures out for a few folk as well
Wally and Dave – Dennis will chime in I am sure on his criteria but if you go to Oilers Nation they have the podcasts of Lowetide’s show and he interviewed Dennis a few weeks back. You’d be getting it straight from the source there. What’s interesting actually is that for the most part markers tend to be pretty close. Dennis is a tougher marker than most. I did similar stuff on the 72 Series and I will count a post or even a missed net as a SC, I don’t think he does in most cases.
But here’s the key of course, if you’re a tougher marker or not the numbers show us what we’re looking for. Unless you count every shot wafting in from 60 feet out as a chance then the posts and missed in close that one guy counts and another does not still show essentially the same results. So Dennis as Horcoff as 7-3. If you asked Kent Wilson who does chances for the Flames or Staples, who I think does counts as well, I would bet that their numbers may be different but they would show the same result. So maybe one guy as 7-3, another guy 8-3, another 8-4.
What we’re looking for and what Dennis has provided us for years now, is a measure as to what guys excel (or not) at the most important part of the game. So last year we could see early on that Hall and Eberle were the real deal. Game in, game out they, along with Horcoff, were outchancing the other club, and very often the other club’s best.
Or the fact that Jones last year and Jones this year are two different players.
So while personal opinion does count unless the criteria are ridiculous (everything is a chance or nothing is a chance) the slight difference you may see between markers will come out in the wash.
Dont get me wrong I have no doubt that Dennis would do a massively better job than I ever would – but after you said that Kent did the same I checked out Flames nation – special teams had the same figures but evens Kent was 15-10 Flames but here its 14-14 – I wont even try to imagine who was closer – but even among the best (and these guys are the best) then there will still be bias (however unintentional – maybe I should have added in my dozen that they were all impartial as well – yeah good luck on organising that one ha !)
By the way love all the stuff you guys do here and on BDHS
thanks Dave appreciate it
Jeff Petry has had a few bad games in a row. It looks like he is deferring to Whitney, and that Whitney’s not quite ready to shoulder that.
You can lay out their results on a spreadsheet to see where they differ.
6 times in the first period, 4 times in the 2nd and thrice in the third.
It looks like Kent might’ve gone for a beer with 3 minutes left in the game.
I will go get the podcast, listen, and try to catch up. I have somtimes questioned the advanced stats that are used in my favorite blogs and just wondered on the criteria. My primary curiosity was the “offense” that Omark brought to the table with a lack of shots on goal (and points) to back it up. Last night the oilers first goal did not result in a scoring chance. While maybe a lucky goal, it is still more effective than Linus and Ales dangling through four guys only to be pokechecked by the last defender. Flashy but not effective.
By lack of shots do you means lack of shots by Omark or by his line as a whole?
Check it out Wally, its good stuff. I’m not a huge advanced stats guy myself but really this is pretty basic stuff and its pretty clear that all NHL teams do it, coach after coach refers to it as a very important part of what they track.
