crumbs thats a low event game – only 5 in both the last 2 periods combined …
Hey Dennis,
I tracked for this one as well. A quick look tells me I’m a lot more liberal with my scoring chances. My chances were completely subjective, and I’ll have to do it a few more times to be consistent. I had 18-14 overall for Edmonton, but 15-7 5×5 (actually, I think that includes the empty net). I don’t think it will show up properly if I paste it here but I can email it to you if you’re interested.
Ian
dawgbone actually did this game.
Dawgbone is evidently only counting up the Grade A chances. I had Grade A chances at 12 to 12, with Oil outchancing Minny 18-17 overall.
Dennis, do you not count ENG under any circumstance? From where that shot came it would have been a SC with a goalie in the net. Is that not your criterion?
I had another 9 or 10 chances that I listed under my “watch again” list. For instance, there was a Ryan Smyth one in the first period where he drove from the wing and while he got into the outskirts of the prime scoring area (right near the side of the net), Harding didn’t have to move an inch to make the save and there was never any real threat to score.
Yeah, so that’s where we differ. I think a shot from a dangerous area is a scoring chance, unless it’s really flubbed. My reasoning being (a) good goalies can make difficult saves look routine with solid angles and (b) if we’re trying to measure who can generate chances, the chance has been generated by the point the shot is taken. I can see your point, though.
I was also initially unsure what I wanted to do with missed shots and posts. By my reasoning, the chance has been generated BUT there is no chance to score since it was missed. Hence, I didn’t count any. I’ve noticed that people often count posts, but I’m not sure why one would count a post but not a missed shot. It’s just a matter of degree (and noise), they are both shots that can’t go it.
I’ll count any shot from a good position, goal, good save, post, missed net or flubbed into the goalies chest. The point is you got the puck into the right position in the first place.
The reason I didn’t include the Smyth one was because of the fact that he took it from the boards to the side of the net and got a backhand off. Had he gotten to the other side (so across the net) or had it been a pass or a rebound I’d have given him credit for the chance. On that particular play the goalie would have to literally do everything wrong to not make the save, even on an excellent shot.
