Ah, come on … you gotta give Smyth a scoring chance on his goal!! Maybe a loooong shot, but still a chance!!
Corey F. Potter!
Yeah, 44′s the key to a lot of things, namely his emergence – if continued – means the Oilers don’t have to be in a real hurry to acquire another dman and thus gives them time to see how they look with both 83 and 89 in the lineup.
If he’s still playing well at the 20 game mark then it’s time to get him signed or else risk this turning into a Jan Hejda-repeat.
I keep looking for a major flaw and I don’t see it. So, perhaps we have found our Brian Rafalski-lite: a guy who was buried and all of a sudden blossoms. Oilers used to be known as a team who could find and groom defensemen that had slipped through the cracks of other orgs but it had been a long time since they picked a winner.
The earliest the Oilers can sign Potter to an extension is Jan 1, 2012, since he’s ona one year deal.
Tom Fucking Gilbet
4-1 in 25+ min doing the heavy lifting
Remember though, according to Damien Cox, you’d have to trade your 1st overall pick with Gilbert and get a 7th back to get rid of him.
Interesting split on the two PP units this game; it seemed like the first unit was generating more of the chances (with admittedly more opportunity) so far this season.
Well the first unit does typically get more icetime which helps.
The Colorado game was similar. The first unit couldn’t do anything on the ice and the 2nd unit scored a PP goal.
Second PP units often see second PK units, don’t they? Although I suppose PK forwards get cycled a little more often than d pairings which complicates the generalization.
Generally your top PP unit will see 2 shifts of PKers anyways when they are out there.
The PPTOI split is remarkably democratic too.
Well, they just keep on rolling don’t they? I haven’t been able to see a game in two weeks and maybe I should keep that up. Really just two fluky games on this run – WSH and COL – which is pretty good as far as streaks go.
I think I went through the games and iirc the Oilers have outchanced opponents seven of twelve games. Now I think they may have lost one or two where they outchanced and similarily won one or two they were outchanced in, I’m talking about the close ones, not including the Caps and Avs. So the majority of this is bought and paid for and it looks like that was a bit of a blip. Of course the Caps are an elite team and the Avs were 2nd of a back to back at altitude so what the hey.
Interesting too is I heard Renney a couple of weeks back talking about SC and how the Oilers’ goal was to limit the opponent – I beleive the number he gave was 12 but it may have been 15, I can’t recall exactly.
They seem to have met that goal nearly every night.
He’s done a terrific job this year. More horses to work with but still a fine job.
I’ve noticed that Scoring Chances are becoming more and more popular these days. The stat even popped up on the screen in last nights game at one point. The commentators seem to mention them a lot more as well.
Maybe the league will soon get on the bandwagon and start tracking these things officially! Dennis could go back to watching the games like everyone else!
Ribs: as long as they don’t include sarcasm, I’ll be safe;)
