Kent Wilson and I have contributed to some updates that James Mirtle is doing on his blog relating to how the Canadian teams stand after this summer. It attracted an inordinate amount of whining from an American on Twitter who feels that the Globe & Mail has some sort of an obligation to crank out 23 more pieces that nobody will read about American teams and my contribution attracted a lot of animosity from Oilers fans who think that I am, as I’m told the kids say, “a hater” because I choose not to put my belief in the management team that brought us the past five years. I can’t imagine going through life with the memory of a goldfish; it must be nice never to have past events influence your expectations for the future.
I think that this is probably my favourite comment, from general fan of authority figures godot10:
Leave it to the Globe and Mail to pick a soccer-loving bike-riding lawyer know-it-all from Toronto to comment on the Oilers. -).
Lets see if they pick someone from Montreal to comment on the Leafs.
Tyler is a “nice” guy and all but he tends to see everything about the Oilers and Edmonton ONLY in inverse-rose-coloured glasses.
Yep, Kevin Lowe has done a lot of dumb things since the Oilers moved for the slums moneywise to the middle class. But he is far from the first GM to turn stupid when he finally had money to spend.
I say again on the inverse-rose-coloured-glasses point: go read this from 2006, after the Oilers lost to the Blues and the playoffs looked doubtful. My credentials as a believer are sterling, where appropriate to do so. Godot10 implictly acknowledges the lunacy of believing in Lowe here, as his last paragraph basically says “Sure Lowe is incompetent. But LOTS of them are incompetent.” Keep in mind, Lowe is the brains of the two.
Heckuva job, running the Edmonton Oilers. Kim Jong Il probably yearns for the lack of accountability to the people paying the freight that comes with it.
