   For those wondering why the 13 or 89 lines didn’t do better it was hard to climb out of the huge 3/10 EV chances hole that the Oilers dug for themselves in the first 20 min and the 89 line can look great in the O zone but they also give up a lot.

   What I liked about tonight’s game was the last time the Oilers took the boots at Phx I remarked to friend how the Yotes D looked easy to work down low but the Oilers never bothered to try it out. Tonight that seemed to be the plan as Edmonton cycled and worked and waited for the coverage to break down.

   Boy, those lines stick together like glue! You see the same thing in ZoneStarts and EV Corsi for the most part – all three guys with very similar numbers. No MacBlender on this club!

   The Oilers just can’t seem to get two decent lines. For all the raving about 91-89-23, it seems the best they can hope for is even on chances. The bottom six just stinks.

   Over the last 10 games it seems like the 4th line has been holding their own, especially with 33 out.

   I think I’m going to crusade for the return of Arnott on a 2 year deal this summer!

   Penner-Arnott-Hemsky
   Hall-Horcoff-Eberle
   Pajaarvi-Gagner-Omark
   Jones-Cogliano-Reddox

   With all the young guys being a year older, I think this forward group might be good enough for a playoff spot.

   It would keep 91-89-23 a little more sheltered, and they might be in a position where they can beat up on the soft opp.

   In looking at last night and 49′s last few games – and in understanding there’s 34 more to go – you might have to think about a 49-58 third pairing for 2012 and getting two real D to compliment 6-77 up in the top two pairings.

   All of our first round pick or 5 or 89 could be play in order to get the things that we need. Furthermore, as soon as 14-83 get back to flesh out the wings then we should see 4 play pivot for the rest of the season just to see if he can handle it.

   If he can then we have 4-10 down the middle and we decide how we go after the other primary pivot and who we give up for him. Right now it’s 10 plus two kids who are trying to find their way but it’s tough sledding faceoff wise.

   I’m not as down on 89 as some others but if 4 can hang then we can go 4-10 down the middle plus an Arnott or Handzus and 13 can hang around as the 4th line pivot

   DB: what does Arnott have left in the tank?

   AH: Yes, it appears that they’ve been playing better and the optics would be even better if Renney was really trying to match lines and wasn’t letting them get caught on occasion.

   I’m not overly impressed with him just because of what’s going on with the ST but if he’s not matching lines next year I hope he’s fired.

   Here’s what I’d go with if 14-83 come back at the same time

   27-4-14

   91-10-83

   28-89-23

   16-13-85

   Note: I’d bring up Hartkinianen, sp:) if we move 16.

   Not sure Dennis, he had 2 pretty solid years before heading to New Jersey and everyone on that team has fallen down an elevator shaft this year.

   I think he’s got enough in him to be a #2 tough minutes C on this team.
