Big surprise, we played like shit again.
How do you do it Dennis? I mean I’m still watching but I can’t be bothered to follow the play closely. Everything is just a fucking train wreck out there.
Oh yea and fuck 27. Maybe you should wait until you show some sustain before you go blaming your previous coach for your struggles. Tool.
I really have a tough time listing Oilers I like these days:
10, 71, 89, 78 and 83.
I don’t mind 13, 24, 34, 46 and 67 although I don’t rate any of that group.
I actually dislike the rest of them. Oh and naturally I totally hate #4.
I like 77 and 32, but our lists are pretty much the same.
91, 19, 24, 18, 12 (tease), 44 (selfish prick), 43 (nice guy but a terrible hockey player), and 22 can all go fuck themselves.
And I’m not too hot on 27. I probably shouldn’t have let his comments about coaching and the change in his game slip back in October. I wasn’t entirely convinced he could sustain it, but still, I should have been more critical of his stance.
Oh I do like 32. 16 is OK too. 77 I could have planted in the ambivalent group, but I’m not a fan. His game should have cleaned up by now.
This is part of the problem watching the Oilers right now - I just don’t like these guys very much and they suck as a group. Combine that with the hopelessness in the front office and it’s a drag.
Nice to see a win, it’s been getting painful lately.
I listened to this one on the radio again, it’s a lot easier to be optimistic when you’re not watching. Bob thought they were dominant in the first two periods, both territorially and in terms of chances. At this point I prefer Bob’s interpretation of the game, it’s a lot more hopeful than when I’m watching.
They hung on for dear life in the third, there is concensus on that.
Rod has become a lot easier to understand now, as well. I think because he doesn’t mention the opponents by name unless he immediately recognizes them. So I haven’t got much of a clue of who was playing against who and when. Maurice mentioned before the game that two young players had stepped up and been really hard on the puck, and that had allowed him to shuffle his game plan and get Staal and Whitney ice time together and in more situations to have offensive success. Must be Sutter and Dwyer, no?
As well, just checked the EV faceoff zones and the oilers had 19 draws in their own end and just 10 in the offensive zone.
And by corsi it rolled 61-31 in favour of the bad guys. Granted that gets exaggerated a bit because they were clinging to the lead for the third … still, smacks of ass-ownership.
And it’s right in line with your scoring chances at 11-18.
My point, and I do have one … Bob is wildly misrepresenting the balance of play in the games on CHED, and in the Oiler’s favour. And he is doing it in compelling fashion.
Normally I would hate that, but it is a lot better than reality in this case. I prefer it to watching the games. Seriously.
I still like 27 as a player. Terrible game tonight though.
I’m still holding out hope for 19 too. Like most Oilers he is paid a bit too much, but at least he helps out on special teams. Plus, he seems like he is switched on. Like he knows what he should be doing, even if it doesn’t always work outon the ice. If he gets stronger onthe puck he could be useful going forward I think.
I’ve completely given up on 13 and 12, the sense of entitlement on those cats just galls me. Gagner doesn’t come across much better, but at least he’s usually good on the ice.
And poor Fernando, he’s done. We get flashes of the old fernie now and then, short stretches of games where when he’s heading into the corner you just KNOW he’ll end up with the puck and make a play. Then his play falls off a ledge, then usually goes back on IR … it’s an endless cycle. He should retire.
I didn’t see the first but most of the second and the third was played in the OIlers’ end. The first five minutes of the second it seemed like the Canes were on a PP and they were not. Pretty frightening, they’re better than their position in the standings but certainly not all that good. And Staal did absolutely nothing.
The one thing that has changed since the lockout that has realy changed players are these deals they get right out of entry level. A guy like Gilbert gets 24 million after a year and a bit, Nilsson gets nearly six after twenty good games. I’d blame Lowe but the reality is these contracts are pretty standard these days. O’Sullivan got one too. A guy does not to have done much but show flashes of potential and he gets paid.
Must be galling for the vets who worked their bag off forever before getting paid. And a twenty one year old kid hitting the jackpot? Not really a recipe for success. Most kids that age don’t have the experience or smarts to handle it, imo.
At least the Oilers before 2005 were poor, relatively speaking. They made little money and so they worked their asses off in the hope of getting paid.
As for the team there is very little to cheer for. Horcoff and Hemsky and poor Fernie. I’m with you Vic, I hope he retires. I like Lubo and I like Smid. At least when he plays with Lubo.
And Gilbert and Pouliot. Gagner is becoming a good player but he’s a bit of a punk I think.
I liked Colin McDonald when he came up.
I don’t get the same punk vibe from Gagner that you guys do. Cogs has it in spades though.
Maybe it’s just that Gagner has a little more rope with me.
Yeah, it probably helps that Gagner doesn’t completely suck.
Horcoff got a sick hard match against Staal, he played 15.5 last night with Staal (15.0), Whitney (14.9), and Jokinen (14.6) his most common opponents. His common mates were Comrie/Moreau.
Outchancing Carolina’s best guns with a wash out and a cast off? That’s the Horcoff I remember so fondly.
Horc had a really inspired game last night, too bad it didn’t click for him.
He was doing a hell of a job against Staal in the face-off department, winning them clean as well as in the tie ups. There was one where he tied up Stall completely, the puck went to the side and Horcoff gained body position and got to the puck before anyone else.
And as a positive note… the sv% behind him has climbed from .858 to .876! Almost Winnipeg Jets circa 1984 goaltending.
I only watched a few minutes last night before going to bed. Horcoff looked like he was flying though. Some nifty plays, the whole deal.
Just out of curiosity Dennis - is 22’s goal a scoring chance if it doesn’t go in? I laughed at it.
Since Vic brought 19’s special teams abilities up, and I finally loaded the last ten games of chances into my spreadsheet, it behooved me to look and O’Sullivan is actually pretty damn impressive. He’s a clear second best among regular forwards with a (35.7) SCD/60 on the PK, and he’s actually the best regular forward with a 37.4 SCD/60 on the PP.
If we can fill out the roster with some decent forwards so he isn’t lining up with the dregs, I could see him being pretty useful. His ES game is probably nothing to write home about, even with good players, but the kid has enough going for him that I like him over a lot of the crap polluting this roster, even at his high price.
Ty - on Gagner I do like his game, last night he won a lot of puck battles, he’s definitely willing to compete and he’s generally not afraid to get his nose dirty.
I can’t really put my finger on it. Just seems to have been born with the hockey silver spoon, not sure why that would bother me.
Maybe just a little too cocky for my liking. And the celebrations when he scores leave me cold. Act like you’ve been there before a little.
Hey Dennis, I notice that Gagner scored a goal without being on the ice at the time. I guess he’s got reason to be cocky if he can pull shit like that!
And your line combinations in post 1, 18-10-34 should read 18-10-91.
Sorry if I come across like an asshole proofreader, I’m actually very enamoured with this terrific project you’ve committed to and assume you want to get it as accurate as possible.
Vic: Stauffer’s pretty much gone into schill mode now and it must be tough for him to swallow that not everything was MacT’s fault:)
Ty: No, that 22 chance is a too poor of an angle to call it an SC.
Bruce: Yeah, I don’t mind you being a stickler:)
Everyone: I had the Canes at -1.5 - they had to win by 2 goals - at +260 - that means I’d win 260% of what I’d bet - and when JDD let in the first one I thought it was smooth sailing. But the Oilers played well enough in the first period that I thought about hedging.
But then I got caught up watching an online feed of the Lakers game because I had the Lakers and a Celts parlay and the Lakers fucked me because they lost by two.
The message? It was a bad night.
