It’s like there’s a huge picture of Kevin Lowe on the ice at Rexall and these guys just skate out there 41 times a year to take a giant deuce on it.

I hate to say it, but I’m also starting to relish watching Pat Quinn’s reputation get its face kicked in too.

You have to love how this season is going, if you’re a fan of hoping something changes.

I know that McGuire was trying to convince everyone that Quinn’s still working hard and has all kinds of fire but something happened in this game that leads me to believe otherwise.

Just before the 3-0 goal the Hawks pinned the Oilers in their zone for a long time before 44 finally iced the puck; this gave the Oilers the briefest of respites but now the Hawks could change their players and the Oilers couldn’t change anyone.

I know the club was likely to lose anyway but at this point it was still Just 2-0 and while they were on the ropes a TO by Quinn might have gave the charges a chance to rest.

He didn’t call it and Chi kept the pressure on to the point of only three of five players being able to change and not long after the faceoff it was 3-0.

I went to the last two games and what I noticed about Quinn was that in the last minute against Dallas he put Potulny out in Pisani’s spot as a second centre in case Horcoff got kicked out of the draw. Well Horc won the draw but they couldn’t get out of their own end and then they couldn’t get out of their own way and then the puck was in the net and that was that. And I heard Quinn explain after the game about why Potulny was out there but I was thinking to myself, huh, I don’t remember us doing the two centres routine at any time and Potulny has never played a shift at RW in his life that I’ve seen, and he was one guy (although not the only one) who had no idea what the fuck to do out there in that situation.

Well tonight Chicago was kicking our butts 2-0 and really rolling, but halfway through the second when they were defending the end where I was sitting, there was a faceoff in their D-zone so Ladd came off and Madden came on just for the draw as a second centre on the Sharp line. So the Hawks win the draw and they get the puck and move it out easy as pie and Madden hits the bench and Ladd comes back out and the game carries on. And I’m thinking maybe these guys look like they know what they’re doing cuz they’ve actually done it before, they do it all the time and it’s just sound hockey. Whereas when we do it it’s so far outside the normal state of affairs that it just causes more confusion than anything. And that’s on Pat Quinn, or at least some of it is.

The rest of it is on the fact that Chicago has a guy like John Madden they can use for such purposes, and we have to rely on a guy like Ryan Potulny because management didn’t bother to sign a veteran C for the last two years.

Btw, Dennis, I watched the second period on the PVR later, and when Hossa made it 4-0 they had the chances that period at 10-0 Hawks. You had it 11-0, so a nice match given it was hard to tell when one scoring chance ended and the next one begun. What was easy to tell was which end of the ice it would happen in. You’ve got 17 Hawks chances in a row up there, which is beyond ridiculous.

Without looking up the details, the Detroit game in flu season where the Wings took a 5-1 deficit to a shootout was about that bad, but surely to goodness it wasn’t 17 in a fucking row. I’d be willing to bet that’s a first. I’ll bet 28:30 between chances might be a “record” of its type too; possibly challenged only by a team sitting on a lead and focussed on preventing chances against. Obviously none of those things describe last night’s Oilers. What a shitshow.

Just looked up that Detroit game, and the Wings ran off 16 straight chances with the Oilers not generating even one for about 26 minutes. So last night was even worse, and there were no score effects contributing to the flow of play. The only score effect was Chicago kicking ass because they were so much superior to their lifeless opponent.

Since I quit spending hours of my finite life watching this abortion of a hockey team, I’ve been relying a lot on Dennis’ scoring chance sheets to give me a semi-objective idea of how individual players are performing. Generally I scan the list, and note any players that stand out by outchancing the opposition in a losing cause, or whatever.

I scanned this once, read it more thoroughly, burst out laughing, then scrolled down to the comments: “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA” No kidding.

That was the bottom 6 and they were very low event, playing mostly against Chicago’s bottom 6 and not the Toews or Sharp lines that ate Oilers’ lunch all night. Funny thing was in the third Quinn switched Nilsson into Stortini’s spot with Poo and JFJ, while Stortini got a shift with Potulny and POS. They played 27 seconds together, and Potulny scored on what was both his and POS’ only scoring chance of the game, on a cough job by Kjalmarsson a few seconds after 46 had really crunched him.

So Quinn responds by nailing Stortini’s ass back to the bench and double shifting Cogliano in his spot, POS and Potulny immediately return to thier smurflike ways and generate SFA the rest of the way.

I’m not Pat Quinn, but if I was scrambling the lines looking for chemistry and a new trio went out there and fucking scored on their first shift, I might just give them another look. Doesn’t seem like rocket surgery.

I think the most amazing thing from last night was that it was the first secondary ES assist of the season for Horcoff!

I don’t even think I’m making that up either!
