Gregor trots out one of the favourite memes of the local sporting press:

The first game at home after a lengthy road trip is tough on many teams, but over the years the Oilers have struggled to put forth a good effort — and they know it.

They had a meeting this morning that focused on ensuring they don’t have a let down tonight.

Since 1999-00, the Oilers have taken 41 points out of 30 games after a road trip of four games or more. That’s a 112 point pace over 82 games. The fevered summer dreams of Kevin Lowe and Steve Tambellini aside, they have not been anything near a 112 point team at any point during that time period. It’s almost certainly just randomness but I find it amazing that the truth is completely opposite the facts; this isn’t seizing on something meaningless – it’s seizing on something invented.

That’s hilarious. It’s a shame there isn’t a way to make bad journalism painful to the writer.

I always thought this may be an invented belief. Although, if it’s only home games being taken into account, then shouldn’t the entire home record be taken over an 82 game season to be able to determine what point pace the team would play at–as opposed to home/road. Unless you have already done that.

In his defence, he probably just stole the idea from someone else.

“The first game at home after a lengthy road trip is tough on many teams,”

Sean O’Donnell used that exact line in the post-game interview.

      Rick Olczyk?

Hey, it was true once for one team, so it must hold for every team, right? If they struggle, well, it’s to be expected. If they do well, OMG EXCEPTION THAT PROVES THE RULE.
