I think that, by the chances, this may have been 71’s worst game of the season. And they didn’t have Hemsky, Souray or Horc. And they won. Go figure.

Potulny just keeps getting it done, eh? Even playing with Stortini and Moreau. Last year, by scoring chances and corsi, he was pretty close to scratch. The rest of the fringe guys and AHL callups got absolutely massacred by both measures. Looked good by eye too. Apparently played 8 games last year, that’s more than I remember.

How the hell did Potulny and Stortini manage to lead the forwards in corsi ( 0 and +1) and scoring chance +/- (+2 and +2) yet Moreau ends up even at chances, and a whopping -8 at corsi. I don’t remember then playing apart, someone must have gotten a couple or a few shifts in Moreau’s spot, or Ethan took a couple of extra EV shifts after the PP’s maybe.

The criticism of Potulney seems to be his footspeed, but he always seems to get to the right places on time. He may look slow in practice, but it doesn’t seem to reveal itself in the games.

In any case, Moreau and Pisani are well and truly done. Moreau was never hell in the first place, but injury and age have taken their toll. And it’s not our fault that Fernando got colitis, and injuries have piled on top of that, he’s been brutal ever since.

I wonder what Smid’s scoring chance numbers look like sans-Lubo? I bet they’re ugly. They should play Smid with Lubo all year and then trade him at the deadline. I’m starting to think that I could look good playing with Lubo. I’d just pass him the puck straight away, while Vis still had some space around him, then move to open space in a conservative while.

That Chorney is a grenade thrower, he can’t play against good NHL players.

Back on Potulney: Ryan Stone is the other B List prospect who actually looks like he could be a genuinely useful player in this league. He came across in the Garon trade, no? Potulney in the Syvret trade I think (In fairness to Syvret, according to Geoff Ward his brutal AHL plus/minus was misleading, his scoring chance plus/minus was pretty decent. If true, that would really have hurt his point totals too. He probably had more trade value than we imagined by looking at the AHL boxcar numbers).

Maybe the Oilers should trade all of their fringe NHLers and B list prospects for the same from other teams.

In any case, the depth is still geting murdered, it looks like the gap between the good players and the drek has widened even further. In truth I imagined it has narrowed a bit. Quinn just isn’t making as much effort to protect guys like Gagner, Cogliano and Nilsson by running them with at least one or two of the following in play (against tired legs, weak opp esp when leading, offensive zone draws).

There isn’t much evidence to suggest that Oilers mgmnt are going to fix the problem, either. Buckle up, Dennis, then pray to the hockey gods, esp the ones in charge of special teams. Reasonably healthy I think the Oilers would struggle to grab 50% of the territorial advantage and 50% of the scoring chances against average NHL competition … and they may well be in a hole before that mythical ‘fairly healthy squad’ takes the ice.
