Out of curiosity, could we get the other teams totals posted at the bottom as well?
Anyone know if Vic Ferrari’s updated his Corsi/Fenwick number webpage that he used for the “Viscoff” analysis last year?
I tried using it, but it keeps scanning through last year’s game results. If anyone has a new URL that one can use, it would be appreciated. Thanks.
Good stuff, Dennis. The shots thing is working for this you if you want to check it out. It’s here
Feels about right. The shot clock flattered the Oilers a bit, mostly because CGY missed the net a lot. Still, playing the Flames to evens is no small feat, even at home. And by Corsi the Oil were about evens as well; +1.
The PK looked good to my eye as well. Two goals on three chances is a bit harsh. Phaneuf’s goal was a lucky bounce and the other one was a terrific deflection, but still lucky to my mind. That guy (Moss?) could try that deflection all day in practice and he wouldn’t put many in on he net like that.
And damn, Quinn really does just roll them, doesn’t he? And Sutter is a self proclaimed power vs power guy, and that was certainly the case on Saturday. Good to see both teams playing a ‘box and a man on’ in their own zone, too. Both these teams were uptempo last season, looks like it should stay that way.
Has Regehr explained why Sutter’s hockey-science is better than Keenan’s? To my eye, it’s identical systems play. I’m probably missing some nuance, but it’s hard to imagine more similar bench coaches than Brent Sutter and Keenan. I dunno.
Vis and Hemsky look like they’re still hurting a bit. Comrie might’ve been hurt near the end as well. He was really labouring in defensive zone coverage in a shift near the end, looked like he was grimacing as well.
Quinn’s surely just going to keep rolling lines, so I can see was he’s spread out the talent (or put a schlep on every line, depending on your point of view
). If they would just get a couple of good veteran wingers and a centre, and cut the cord on some of these B list prospects … they’d move from a team that ‘could make the playoffs’ to a team that ’should make the playoffs’.
For the Oilers a lot less fuckery at the blue lines and almost no cherrypicking for the Oilers in that one, really consistent puck support on the breakouts. Good to see. And a lot of players engaging in puck battles instead of trying to beat guys one on one in open ice. We’ll see how long that lasts, though. I mean they had quite a few efforts similar to this one last season too. Sooner or later one or more of the kids will have a hot stretch and that will move them to start playing like Nylander. It’s inevitable. Hopefully Quinn goes apeshit when they do. And hopefully hearing the same message from new voices (Quinn, Renney and Fleming) will cause some of these kids to have a “Hey, maybe it IS me?!” moment. We’ll see.

It’s no different I think. The players were pissed off at Keenan for his disproportionate use of less effective players (i.e. Bertuzzi) which I would agree with. Although it’s a pretty moot point now that Bertuzzi is not on the team.
Vic: it won’t be reflected in this metric but, yes, I noticed a difference in the way the Oilers played and let’s see if that approach carries the day for the next little while.
And, for sure, the Oilers had some bad luck on the PK and with the Ugly goal for sure but I just look at this roster and I don’t see a lot of guys that can kill penalties and that worries me.
For as much as the announcers raved about Giordano - I thought he got smoked in that game and the chances sort of show that.

Also, Keenan is infamous for not practicing his special teams. Sutter is quite the opposite. I think that’s where a lot of the talk about “structure” comes from; Sutter just practices system play and special teams more.
And for some reason, during Tuesday’s game vs. Montreal, Iginla played 16:30, nearly all at EV (only one non-coincidental penalty, lasted 21 seconds), but half of that was in the third. I guess Sutter was running the hot hand (Nystrom? Really?), but that’s just weird.

Iginla has played like shit so far this season.

Biggest difference I’ve seen so far is when Iginla or whoever is not playing well, they play less. Iggy got less ice time than many of the 2nd and 3rd liners the other night against Montreal. That would never happen under Keenan. I don’t know too much about systems, but even if the only difference between Keenan and Sutter is that Sutter rewards good play and punishes poor play the Flames will be far better off.
