Liam Reddox certianly seems to be trying to make Marc Pouliot’s case for him.
That was a strange game. If it wasn’t for the fact that everything the Oilers threw at the net seemed to have a good chance of going in … it would have been unwatchable.
I have no idea what Granato is doing there. I know they’ve had long term injuries to key guys and the team just isn’t as good as some of us (like me) thought it would be. Still, strangeness all around.
Just to add, I think that most of the Oilers games this winter have been entertaining, even when the result wasn’t what I was hoping for.
And I wonder what the whole story is with MacTavish and Pouliot, there must be an off-ice component here. Same goes for Penner and Nilsson.
Vic: Last night was an odd game because I watched it from somewhere other than the edge of my seat. The Avs had an Oilers March ’07 lineup – OK, it wasn’t That bad – and as soon as the Oil went up 4-1, it was over. Pretty odd for us to be able to enjoy a game for once.
Not really sure what to say about your opinion that the Oilers have been entertaining all season because I haven’t been pleased with the results so that certainly colours the games. I do know that, taking a look at it now from a distance, some of the past few games have been a lot of fun. Games in Nsh and at Mtl were either chance-trading or physical so those are always fun; the first two periods vs Atl was pretty good as well.
Ya Dennis, one of those rare easy wins. Budaj was bad, but the Oilers were making their shots too.
I always watch games like this and think “damn, why couldn’t a deflection from Gagner rattle between the wickets and squidge across the line against Atlanta? Why couldn’t a snap knuckler by Souray from the point have fooled Price in Montreal? When Budaj leave a tiny opening short side, and Gagner whacked it through there … why couldn’t that have happened in the last game against the Avs? Why couldn’t Roloson have made an Inspector Clousseau style back-of-the-leg save against the Preds a couple of weeks ago?”
I mean the Oilers were full marks for the win, this is as much as they’ve outchanced any WC team on the road all year I suspect. But the hockey gods are going to have to be a bit more selective with the timing of their gifts if the Oilers are going to make the playoffs with a six seed. Of course I’ll be happy if they just make it at all.
The first line looks solid to me though, for the first time all year really. That should bode well, even though outplaying didn’t translate to outchancing and outscoring for them on this night.
The Oiler playoffs are close enough that I can smell them when the breeze is blowing the right way, Dennis.
Why couldn’t a snap knuckler by Souray from the point have fooled Price in Montreal?
Am I not getting the joke here? Because I’m pretty sure Souray did put a snap shot from the point past Price in Montreal.
It wasn’t a joke at all, Colby.
Good point though, just pretend that I had put “another” in that sentence about Souray’s goal and it should read right. They should have won that game against the Habs on merit, as well.
Vic: Yeah, not really sure what’s going on with MacT and 78. At the very least, Pouliot should be on 13′s line so he can take draws. You’d have to imagine that 78′s head’s in a bad place now, though.
He went from being on an offensive line that clicked in three of five games to being a 4th liner to being a healthy scratch.
The guy makes fuck-all and can hold his own vs top nine opp so I really don’t see what the problem is. Does anyone really think 85 can do better?
Its personal between MacT and 78, I would say, just as Vic noted, same as Penner and Nilsson.
Who knows what gives? He’s a useful player imo and I see him in Jersey or Minnesota scoring 15 to 20 and outplaying the opposition for many years.
Too bad if that is how it goes.
