Strudwick
Bruce: Early on, I had a term for someone who wasn’t on ice for a scoring chance for: a Strudwick.
So, he’s had worse nights than tonight:D
Maybe we should rename it a Pouliot.
Not so special teams killed them.
Again.
The refs did their bit and more. But the defence on the OT goal was just shocking. Team Bulgaria wouldn’t have looked that ridiculous.
Cosh: I hate to get on Roli because him and 71 have been our best players but you can’t let out that rebound, you just can’t.
At 4-on-4, now, though, we’re absolute basket cases. The Oilers used to attack and go for it but now – with 19 and 21 newly in the fold – MacT, 18 and 44 are talking in the press about how they’re basically gonna lay back and hope to win in the SO. So, you put guys like 34 out there and you’re laying back and killing clock and you wind up getting killed.
I’m not sure what season it was – I’ll guess it was ’02 or ’03 – but the 4-on-4 format was new and the Oilers were crowing how their speed would make them one of the best such teams in the league. Well, they went through an awful stretch where I’d just go to the fridge and wait for the GA. And that’s where we are now.
Overall, though, it’s the ST that are murdering us. Knighttown had a post over at LT’s place that had us at 3-16 – I always put the Oilers first – since the loss at SJ. I mean, honestly, I don’t think many teams are strong enough at EV to clean up that man-advantaged mess.
The Oilers have old school PK incumbents like 10-18-34. They’ve been breaking in 51 all season. 19′s already made his way onto our PK squad. 78 did it in the ’07 season and marked well in the process. 89 was in fact effective early on this season in this role.
So, why aren’t we going with six forwards that will allow us to go up tempo and be pro-active? And why don’t we block shots anymore?
Will your press credentials allow you to make a trek down to Rexall and ask some thinking man questions?:)
I second that motion Colby. Perhaps the ugliest team defence of the season on a single play.
It’s like they were my son’s bantam team, Tier 8, or whatever it is, clueless.
How can such a play be explained?
How can such a play be explained?
“We Suck” ?
But on the bright side…
Three games in a row now the Oilers have outchanced at EV. First time since 71 went down. It’s a shame they aren’t getting the results, but they’ve been way outperforming their Pythagorean expectation all year (mostly on the road), so it’s hard to complain.
AND, no SH chances against this game. That’s a plus.
Dennis, I also used your scoring chances to look at consistency over at my place. I think it’s interesting and would be interested to hear what you think.
Scott: I am on my way;)
BTW, I was wondering if you could do one last scoring chance comptilation for Cole.
Thanks Dennis.
I’ll publish a running total for everyone tomorrow, but here are Cole’s totals for his Oiler career (GP, EV, PP, PK):
60, 243/236, 74/9, 16/43
Without knowing the full context his PK numbers look really good. The 1:3 ratio is just awesome relative to everybody else.
I can’t identify a good play or a bad play on a PK to save my life (short of, ‘don’t leave someone wide open at the side of the net for the tap in), but I swear that we’re too lax on forechecking, but way over aggressive once the other team actually gains the zone. It seems like, if your defense is chasing guys to the wall, you’re doing it wrong.
