      Well… at least Hemsky stopped bleeding.

      This one’s on special teams for sure. 6 PP opps for, 3 against, and we get outchanced 6-4? At least we made the 5v3 count, but 5v4 Oilers were shit and it cost them a huge SHGA. Then we had the PP to end regulation and the first chunk of OT and got fuck-all accomplished.

      Then there’s that other “special team”, the shootout squad that went 0-for-4 with mostly lame attempts. Add it all up and we got one point instead of the two that were eminently available.

      A tough game chance-wise for 37-77, but Smid had one of his best outings in awhile.

      nice game from Gagner. That was the first game since returning that he looked like he had some quickness. I am extremely pleased with his season this far. Lots of positives outside of the boxcar stats and those are probably a good thing from the Oilers’ perspective too.

      Dennis, when Souray tees it up on the powerplay with a screener in front of the net, I guess I’m seeing those as scoring chances much more than you are. My thought is that the Oil are working for just this play, as it’s a high percentage one, so if they can execute it, that’s a scoring chance.

      Anyway, I had Souray down for five such scoring chances on the PP, while you had him for three. That’s how I saw it anyway, for what it’s worth . . .

      Overall, I had the scoring chances 23-25.

      My number is higher, I’m guessing, because I’m likely counting a few more shots on net where there is traffic in front, and maybe a few more from just outside the slot area, that seem like marginal chances to me, but still chances.

      I’m more interested in who is driving the chances for and against, in any case. Staios had a really rough night in that regard, which was an eyeopener for me, because just from watching the game, I thought he’d done OK. But if you watch those sc’s when he’s out there, he’s losing battles.

      Time grinds us all down into pulp.

      Staples: I thought that the Oilers TV crew was overstating the screens yesterday. A couple of times they’d say the goalie was screened while the play happened live but then when I saw the replay, the Oilers were off to the side of the guy. I am a big fan of screens though and I count those as chances for sure.

      Father Time is choking the life out of 24 and 18 as well.

      I think it will be mighty interesting to track Smid and Strudwick playing together. If they end up being a solid third pairing while Visnovsky is out, the evidence against Staios would continue to mount.

      It’s also mighty interesting to see Grebs and not Gilbert getting the push on the PP. That may have to do with his back I suppose but I still found it a little bit surprising this game. We’ll see if it persists.

      An interesting sidebar no doubt, Scott.

      I really don’t have any faith in either of 5 or 24 being able to jump into the top four and keep their heads above water simply because they haven’t been able to do it in the third pairing.

      Now, we may get an idea of which guy was dragging the other down but when push comes to shove I don’t believe either can hang.
