Good lord. We’re going to spend 200 comments in the next LT thread talking about what needs to happen after this loss, but I’m pretty sure any discussion of this game can start and end at the first line choke job.

      Uh….

      3-12? Wow…

Nice job by the 4line too. The problem with that 1line is that they don’t have a big LW who can create some space and stand in front of the net.

Need one of those but they’re rare.

Well, you can certainly see that the Oilers piled on some chances after the 3-1 goal and that’s bound to happen because then the Hawks are going into prevent defense.

But before that the Oilers had a lot of high quality opps and Huet stood tall on them. Speaking of which, yes, terrible night for HemCoff but 10 had two excellent chances in the first period and I still can’t believe he missed that chance from the slot on the PP in the 3rd. This could’ve been like the win vs CBJ when the Oilers didn’t deserve to win but they had a ripping average with RISP.
Some other thoughts: 77 was having a brutal game but then midway the light went on and he started slipping down into the slot like the old days and even threw in some bullying to boot. If we take tonight’s game to heart then we can surmise that 78 is a guy who doesn’t respond to tough love because he looked as lost as I ever saw him. As well, 12 was like the guy who’s been trying to hook up with his hot best friend forever and when she gives him the chance, he gets loaded and fucks it up;)

Not that something like that ever happened to me, mind you;)

Yikes. I was at the game and didn’t think the scoring chances against 10/83 were that one-sided.

Tough love aside, that line is best when they’ve got Penner with them. Time for MacT to stop cutting off his nose to spite his face, put Horpensky back together, and LEAVE IT THAT WAY.

What does it matter though? This team is severely fucked without Visnovsky for (probably) the next 4-6 weeks. If Steve Staios is in your top 4D, you’re not a playoff team, plain and simple.

Lost in the shuffle of the 1st and 4th line madness was another pretty good game for the 21-89-26 troika. I hope they stay together for at least another couple of games.

I think a lot of the blame for this one can go to the PP too. It was what, six minutes of PP time and they generated only two chances. That’s pretty brutal. I’m especially surprised Penner didn’t get shuffled into the PP on the last chance of the game given how well his line had played and his track record of success, but… oh well.

Dennis, did you see the home/road splits?

    7. February 4, 2009 at

Scott, I saw the home splits and then as I was about to get to the road deal, something came up and I logged off.

Great work though and I will comment on it over at your site.

I think a lot of the blame for this one can go to the PP too. It was what, six minutes of PP time and they generated only two chances.

Whereas the Hawks generated three chances, and a Goal, in the less than two minutes it took them to convert their only opporutnity. The special teams combined went 0-for-4, so there’s equal blame for both units in my books. Not to mention for the guy who took the bonehead penalty.

I’m especially surprised Penner didn’t get shuffled into the PP on the last chance of the game given how well his line had played and his track record of success, but… oh well.

I would have shuffled Penner’s whole line onto that last powerplay and was disappointed when that didn’t happen. They were the Oilers best by a wide margin on this night, as the scoring chances attest.

Brodziak was particularly unfortunate to end up -1 on a +7/-1 scoring chance night, with that one chance against occurring after Hemsky had replaced Stortini but the rest of the change didn’t happen. As I recall it was Hemsky who couldn’t get the puck out and eventually Havlat somehow was able to walk out and squeeze one past Roli.
