I guess no one wants to talk about this game and that’s fair:)

But, another poor night for 5/24 and that’s been a trend for awhile now. And that’s a trend coming from a third pairing.

Yeah not exactly the best game of the year. The most frustrating thing was that if you could look past the score we didn’t play a terrible game overall. We out shot and out chanced them but we couldn’t get the puck past Miller. On the other side they go 6 for 16 at 5 on 5.

Hmmm … 10 goals on 20 scoring chances? That doesn’t look good on the goalies, but it also speaks to the quality of those chances. Also, if I’m reading it right, our PP scored 1 goal on 10 chances and Buffalo’s scored 3 goals on 1 chance.

You’re right, Dennis, that the 5-24 pairing struggled last night, Staios in particular to my eye. But there’s not a whole lot of point in singling guys out on a night when the whole team Stunk. Worst home loss in the (NHL) history of the Oilers, and all 20 guys on the team “contributed”.

I want the team to do well.

Just curious though… if we fell out of the race, could we see 24 and 18 dealt at the deadline? COULD WE???

Ryan: in the first period 83 came off the bench to be the extra man for a delaye PP and he walked down the slot and was stoned by Miller.

Neither of Roli or JDD made ONE save like that, let alone two. And the Oil were screening Miller but he was stopping the puck and meanwhile we got nothing from our tender.

Bruce: I was just bringing up the night of 5-24 to basically say the beat goes on for those two.

PDO: Tambolini could move both those guys without giving up on the season. He could move 24 to a team like say the B’s and then also rent a vet D that has just the one season left on his deal.

There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

I’ll admit up front that I didn’t watch the game last night, but just by the numbers singling out the 5 and 24 pairing as being particularly bad isn’t out of line, especially given their recent struggles. Over Smid’s last 15 (logged) games he’s -27 at EV and Staios is -25. That’s just consistently awful.

I guess we’ll all just hope for better play and, especially, better goaltending come Friday.

Note: sometimes a team that would otherwise coast down the stretch is better off for a horrifying, unconditional, record-setting loss like this. Their pride’s on the line now.

How the hell does Staples give out exactly one ’1′ grade in the worst home loss in franchise history?? Shouldn’t ’1′ be the average mark?

    9. January 29, 2009 at

Worst home loss in franchise NHL history. Bruce just posted that they suffered an 11-1 loss to the Jets in ’77.

Like I said in LT’s thread, there’s a superficial similarity between the first here and the first against Chicago, in the sense that the chances were there, they just didn’t go in. If one of those goes in while it’s still 2-0, this is a totally different game, but instead, every other sloppy-ass play wound up behind Roli in the first ten minutes, and that was all she wrote.
