Man you’re speedy now!
Moreau and Staios bombing on the PK, well, in relation to their teammates anyhow
Lubo and Denis are quality. Although I would say its the former who is driving it, needless to say.
Pat: Yes, Vic’s made it so easy for me now that if I’m watching the game live then I can just type in all the info at the intermissions and then I’m ready to post the final results no later than 15 min after the game’s over.
I went back to my old drinking ways during the holidays – and yes I loved it;) – but things are back to normal now and I shouldn’t be missing many more games – I missed the SJ game because of a taping snafu – and everything should run on time.
Yes, the 37/71 duo kicks ass and now you wonder if perhaps we shouldn’t put 71 back in harm’s way and see if that makes a little bit more difference. I mentioned over at LT’s how closely distributed the EVTOI was tonight for the D and Boudreau must have been running OV at 5/24, no? I’m sure we can tell by using one of Vic’s tools but it seems too much of a coincidence that OV was seemingly always bearing down on 24′s wing. At the very least we can tell by these numbers that he was going after one of Smidois or Gilray.
http://timeonice.com/shots.php?gamenumber=20634
Grebeshkov and Vish were the two Oilers’ D that registered Corsi in the black. That jives really well with your chances.
Washington as a team was +12. Ovechkin alone was +14.
Slipper: I think I have a decent good idea of what constitutes a scoring chance and I try to be very consistent. The players on-ice don’t influence me in the least; anyone who knows what I used to think of Souray and what I’ll say about him now should believe that:)
To tell you the truth, I didn’t notice VishKov driving the bus tonight, but Corsi seems to support that idea.
BTW, OV was 8/4 by my metric EV wise. I haven’t looked at anyone else’s numbers.
The players on-ice don’t influence me in the least;
Dennis, I’ve been meaning to ask you about this. Do you consider a 50-foot one-timer by Souray the same as a 50-foot one-timer (sic) by Smid? To this fan one is a scoring opportunity, and one Isn’t. What’s your philosophy on this?
Bruce…
Depends if Penner is feeling like standing in front of the net or not
Bruce: I’m looking to see if they’re moving the goalie from side-to-side and if they are than a shot from 5 means as much as one from 44.
I’m not really getting into each individual player; I’m just looking at where shots from are coming from on the ice and if there’s traffic in front.
Dennis: Gotcha. I watched the first period on tape delay last night, and since you already (!) had posted scoring opps I just watched closely at the appointed times and hey presto, a scoring chance would develop. Your judgement calls seemed legitimate to me, there were one or two more borderline ones that I or others might have judged differently but there is no way to avoid this.
Btw, when was the last time Scott did an update of games to date? I wonder if he will come back and do a major catch-up like he did last time. I also wonder if the new layout Vic set up maybe tabulates game-over-game totals automatically. I’m thinking maybe we can do another SC by TOI summation around the All-Star break.
Bruce: yeah, that sounds like a decent idea. We’d have G46 in the books by then and please God I won’t miss any of the next four so that means I’ll have logged 43 games. That’s a pretty big sample size and the results would give us something to talk about over the break.
Not sure if Scott’s gonna chime in again though I greatly appreciate what he’s contributed so far. And Vic’s driving this bus because I would’ve kept doing it manually but he’s made it so easy now that as long as I’m watching the games at home, they’ll be updated immediately.
Taken from the Globe’s blog on hockey:
__So far this year, Vigneault has been quite willing to share his thoughts on what is plaguing the team, and where it can improve. When it was suggested to him that defensive coverage was an area of concern – as noted by assistant captain Ryan Kesler – Vigneault balked and said the team was giving up less than 12 chances a game on home ice, which should be good enough__
I guess my scoring must be super-liberal because there is no fucking sensible way that the Dys are averaging less than 12 SC’s a game at home; unless you need to get to within five feet of their goal in order to qualify for a chance.
No team’s ever published their scoring chance totals or the methodology behind it and to my knowledge I’m the first guy that’s ever decided to log them online over an entire season. But I thought I’d post this because either I’m way off-base, Vignault’s taking a piss or he believes that his goalie should stop just about everything.
Maybe he doesn’t rate blocked shots or missed shots, or is excluding special teams? Just pondering out loud here.
Out of 21 shot events FOR when Ovechkin was on the ice last night you ranked 8 as scoring chances, so if anything, you are conservative in your observation.
So I’ll accept your word over Vigneault’s on this matter.
Perhaps this weekend I’ll get on logging some scoring chances into the little chart. I basically took a Christmas vacation from life (including internet hockey) for about a month. It was good times.
Anyway, I live in the Vancouver area and Vigneault shares his thoughts on scoring chances quite often on the radio. I’m not sure of his criteria, but they can’t be that conservative because he was talking about outchancing the Sharks through the first two periods and he did have a total in the teens for his boys, though I don’t recall the exact number. I think it’s interesting he talks about it as much as he does because the radio guys don’t know what to do with it since they don’t actually have access to his numbers.
Scott: This won’t mean much to the guys who post here but I was raised in outport NL by my grandparents so I know all about celebrating to the end of the holidays. We observe until O Christmas Day back here – that’s Jan 6th – and I always take an extra week after that before I get back to normal:)
