On firing MacT

There were 22 coaching changes between 2000-01 and 2003-04 in which the old coach had at least 20 games and the new coach had at least 20 games. The old coach put up a combined record of 141-219-52-28; the new coach a record of 160-197-54-29. If you express that on an 82 game basis, it’s 26-41-5-10 as opposed to 30-37-5-10. 75 points instead of 67.

The goal differential doesn’t support it though. The old coach saw his teams score 1057 goals and allow 1306. The new coach saw his teams score 1068 goals and allow 1250 goals. -249 versus -182. It’s probably worth mentioning that a large part of the change is attributable to the Blues switch of Mike Kitchen for Joel Quenneville - that resulted in a 30 goal swing for the Blues, leaving only 37 goal differential spread over the other 21 coaching changes.

On an 82 game basis, we’re talking about 197/243 versus 199/233. That’s more like four points in the standings - over the course of an entire season - than eight. And again, most of that seems to be tied to the Blues.

When you consider that a coach is probably more likely to get fired when things seem to be going poorly and that, in small samples, results don’t mesh up too well with performance (results swing more wildly than performance, IMO), the distinction between the results obtained by the new boss and the results obtained by the old boss probably gets even smaller. The old coaches went 62-71-28 in 1 goal games; the new went 72-57-29. Given that one goal games are largely random, you really have to ask whether there’s actually any difference in result created by the new coach, or whether there’s some truth to the old saying that you’re never as bad as you look when you’re losing or as good as you look when you’re winning.

If people want to advance the “Fire the coach” argument with respect to MacT, well, it’s a free world. I don’t, however, think that the evidence particularly supports that it would have much of an immediate impact or that it would really do much of anything. Coaching replacement level in the NHL is high and, broadly, one coach will make largely the same decisions as the next. The areas where they differ are going to be areas in which they’re fiddling around the edges. I don’t see that there’s enough there and, if I was running an NHL franchise, I’d be hesitant to eat the cost of the coach’s contract when I strongly suspected it would make little, if any, difference.

Why?

I’m not one to light into the coaching and I’m certainly not Dustin Penner’s biggest defender but I honestly don’t know what to make of the decisions in the final eight minutes tonight. Here’s the shift chart:

EDMCBJ

Horcoff and Hemsky? Three shifts. Fine, makes sense.
Cole? Four shifts. He’s been hot lately, alright.
Gagner and Nilsson? Three shifts. Seems about right.
Penner? One shift? Uhh…
Cogliano? One shift?
Moreau? Four shifts.
Pisani? Four shifts.

The ratio of shifts for Penner/Cogliano and Moreau/Pisani seems a little off there. Pisani’s been out since god knows when and is presumably still injured (it’s the Oiler way). Moreau simply isn’t a goal scorer. I don’t know the particular sins for which Penner and Cogliano were atoning tonight but I have a hard time understanding what possible justification there could be for sitting them while pouring the minutes onto Moreau and Pisani down the stretch.

At some point, it would be interesting to hear MacT’s explanation as to how there isn’t a double standard applied to Ethan Moreau. He hasn’t scored in ten games, which isn’t that surprising, given the type of player he is. He’s taken a simply spectacular streak of penalties - 44 minutes in the last several games, several of which have been taken 100+ feet from the Oilers net and several of which have been undisciplined. (The really impressive part about tonight is that Moreau managed to sneak his four shifts into seven minutes; he was in the penalty box until 13:10). Not only is MacT not cracking the whip on him (publicly anyway) but he’s continuing to put him into situations in which Moreau has no claim, in terms of talent or skill, over other players on the team and probably has less of entitlement. If he doesn’t merit it on skill and he’s been doing things that hurt the team, how can it possibly be justified?

This isn’t necessarily what’s sinking the Oilers at the moment - on talent, they’re probably not a playoff team - but I can’t explain it and I can usually see a hockey reason for MacT’s decisions. MacT gave a lot of credit to Columbus tonight and they deserve that credit. Columbus played very well in the portion of the game I watched. I talked to Matt from Battle of Alberta and he mentioned that the Jackets played very well the other night. The Jackets seem to be pretty legitimate. With that said, the decisions about who goes on the ice to try and steal a point in a bad situation are pretty difficult to fathom.

Scoring chances for/against: Feb 19th; Edm at Dal

This is old school - if you consider last November old school - because for some reason the text at NHL.com is omitting netminders for the third period summaries. So, this skews all the numbers and I have to go back and list them old school.

So, the first number is the player’s number and the following three catergories are numbers at EV, SH and PP. If a catergory’s skipped, that means the player didn’t register in that discipline. For instance, right off the top we have Smid who didn’t get any PP time, thus I’ll skip a segment and go straight from his EV to his SH numbers.

The Problem with Democracy

Sometimes people come up with the craziest reasons for casting their votes.

The same is true even in really important votes, with simpler issues, like the awarding of the Hart Trophy. Take this bit of reasoning in support of Ovechkin:

God Loves Me

He sure doesn’t seem to like Senators fans though:

Mike Comrie is headed back to the Ottawa Senators and he’s bringing a puck-moving defenceman with him.

The Sens acquired Comrie and Chris Campoli from the New York Islanders on Friday in exchange for Dean McAmmond and a first-round draft pick.

Campoli possesses the offensive skill that Ottawa has been seeking for its defence. The 24-year-old had spent his entire career in Long Island and is under contract through next season at a reasonable $675,000 (all figures U.S.).

Comrie is currently earning $4 million and will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer. He spent a couple months with the Senators in 2007 and was part of the team that reached the Stanley Cup final.

The first round pick (San Jose’s) will fall somewhere between 21 and 30, I’d imagine. It seems an awful lot to give up for Campoli and a few months of Mike Comrie though. Chris Campoli may possess offensive skill but it doesn’t seem to net him an awful lot of points and he’s been seeing respectable PP time as well as playing softer minutes. The Isles are a terrible team but I’m not sure that even that warrants bestowing the label of offensive defenceman on a guy who’s putting up offensive numbers comparable to Steve Staios in his prime. They get three years of him and he’s an NHLer but I’m not sure that you can’t find guys like him on the scrap heap come the summer.

As for trading futures for today when you’re 13 points out of a playoff spot? Melnyk probably ought to have fired the GM when he did the coach. It’s just crazy.

Most importantly though, I’m going to be at the Oilers-Sens game on March 5. I’m hoping that it’s Ryan Smyth’s first game back in the fold. I’ll settle though, for the chance to boo Mike Comrie along with the rest of the Edmontonian diaspora.
