Labarbera to Vancouver

Per Rich Hammond (h/t Mirtle:

The Kings’ long quest to find stable goaltending took another twist Tuesday when they traded Jason LaBarbera to the Vancouver Canucks for a 2009 seventh-round draft pick.
LaBarbera, who had a 5-8 record, a 2.83 goals-against average and a .893 save percentage, fell behind Erik Ersberg (8-5, 2.38, .903) on the goalie depth chart and became expendable with the recent emergence of rookie Jonathan Quick (2-3, 1.72, .937).

Per Asiaoil:

A guy like Labarberra who has out-performed JDD in both the AHL (by a wide margin) and NHL is worth a 7th rounder. That’s the market and all this BS about JDD being so in demand is just smoke being fed into the mainstream media by Oiler mgmt to justify their usual inept handling of the goalies.

There are 2 goalie markets - the elite guys are worth gold and very hard to get - but replacement value for everyone else is almost nothing (eg 7th rounder) because there are so many Aulds, Labarberras and Garons around.

AO nails it, I think, although my concern is more with the wasted roster spot than anything else. You need an awful lot of evidence before you can be really sure that a goalie is anything worth investing in and, to date, the evidence is that JDD isn’t particularly worth investing in - yes he has nice numbers through six NHL games but there’s a mountain of AHL evidence that isn’t particularly compelling. You can run down the list of goalies - goalies who are far more proven than JDD - who have moved for basically nothing and it is, I think, clear that your average NHL goalie doesn’t have a heck of a lot of worth. When JDD is inevitably moved from Edmonton after having failed to turn into anything that you can’t get for a seventh round pick or for free, there ought to be some questions asked about the wisdom of running with a short roster all year long in order to keep a spot open for him.

I’m looking forward to LaBarbera in Vancouver, just to see how he does away from the gong show that has been the LA Kings for the past few years. My suspicion is that he’ll see his numbers bounce back some. He’s not a world beater but he’s got value in the backup role.

Fool me once…I’ll never believe anything again

I’m quite enjoying the game threads at Lowetide’s site. They’ve gotten relatively sizeable and they don’t have the moron quotient that plagues the game threads at some of your other hockey related sites. Plus, they are frequently funny to the point that they induce actual laughter. There was a comment there the other day from a fellow posting under the name of Phil that caught my eye and I thought warranted something further over here:

After they lose tonight, the Oilers will have 30 points in 30 games - that’s 3 points ahead of last year. The fan in me wants to think that there’s still hope for better days, but the realist in me looks at these 30 games (and throw in all 7 preseason games) and sees a team that either doesn’t have the talent to be competitive, doesn’t have the coaching to make them competitive, or both.

This team is (approximately) a million times better than the disastrous squad that the Oilers iced for the first 30 last year. As Phil notes, at 14-14-2, the Oilers were only three points ahead of last year’s 13-16-1 record through 30 games. It’s the underlying numbers that really tell the story though and should give us hope that they’re good enough that, with the benefit of a run of some sort, they might be able to slide into the playoffs. Whereupon they’ll promptly be slaughtered in five, but still: ’tis better to have rioted on Whyte Avenue once in the springtime and lost, than to never have rioted at all.

Sun Media Poll

Sun Media has a poll out in which they asked more than 50 players, scouts, coaches, executives and media members a variety of questions related to the NHL. It’s hard to get a real taste for how many of these people are media and how many are actually hockey people but the answers to a couple of questions caught my eye.

#5 MOST OVERRATED PLAYER …

1. Sean Avery, in limbo … 9

2. Dion Phaneuf, Calgary … 8

Dion Phaneuf might be at the point now that Derek Jeter made it to with the sabrmetric set. It essence, Jeter was so overrated by the public at large that the sabrmetric types probably gave him less than his due. I’ve thought Phaneuf was overrated before, although I now see him as haven taken sufficiently large strides that, on the whole, he’s probably no longer overrated. If Chuck Klosterman were to discuss properly rated hockey players, Phaneuf may well deserve a spot.

Dan Shaugnessy weeps at the opportunity lost

“They’re both great prospects. Actually, I’ll forget that - we won’t call them prospects anymore we’ll call them players because people get fearful of prospects.”

Kevin Lowe, immediately following the Ryan Smyth trade

“No competitiveness,” MacTavish said in his post game comments when asked about benching [Robert] Nilsson in the third period.

“We try and coddle the competitiveness out of him, but he just didn’t have any again tonight. I’ve had enough and seen enough of it.”

Craig MacTavish, December 19, 2008

-Robert O’Marra’s 2008-09 scoring line in the AHL

Q: You’re back in the NHL now and your Islanders look primed to get back to the playoffs. How were you able to make a deal for Ryan Smyth?

A: So many names were coming up, like Billy Guerin’s name came up. Then, all of a sudden, Ryan Smyth’s name came up. We put the same offer up to Edmonton that we had put up to other teams and they went for it. Give [Islanders GM] Garth Snow credit — he just stuck with it. When Garth called me at 3 o’clock and told me we got the deal done, I couldn’t believe he pulled that deal off.

Ted Nolan

Following the Oilers would be so much more fun if Edmonton had a more vicious press corps. Whether he was right to let him go or not, savaging Lowe for the way that the Smyth trade (let alone the Pronger trade) went down should be the most popular sports in Edmonton.
