The Annual “It’s Early” Post

The Oilers wore their retro jerseys against the Boston Bruins on Monday, but unfortunately Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier were not in the lineup to score a few goals. It’s mystifying how the Oilers can have the second-lowest goals per game average in the entire league with their group of forwards. But here we are, almost through October and Hemsky, Cole and Gagner have NO even-strength goals in eight games. And only two players — Andrew Cogliano and Penner — have more than one goal playing 5-on-5. Penner has two, but hasn’t scored in seven games. The Oilers have 11 even-strength goals in eight games — that doesn’t begin to cut it. Is that the coach’s fault? I don’t think so.

Wish I believed like they do, Pt. I

I was trying for a while before the season to put together a post explaining why it is that I’m so pessimistic about the Oilers’ chances this year and struggling to do so. It just kept getting too big and unwieldy and then the baseball playoffs and then next thing I know, we’re eight games into the season. I kind of figured that it might be better to break it down into bite sized pieces.

One of the high points of the Oilers run towards the end of the year was the PP. Souray came back from injury, Gagner got some games under his belt…things started rolling. I’ve seen detailed arguments about how much better the PP was and that it can be directly tied to the development of the youngsters and Souray’s return. Guys like Lowetide, who is a very smart observer of the game, are suggesting that “…this team…should punish opponents with a splendid powerplay.” In fairness to him, he isn’t explicitly basing this on the results achieved at the end of last year, but, and I’m sure that he’ll correct me if I’m wrong, I’m guessing that it factors into things a little bit.

Dwayne Roloson’s Trade Value

I’ve been in Philadelphia since Friday, attending the World Series. It was definitely one of my better experiences as a sports fan. It certainly beat sitting through games three and four of the ALCS in Fenway Park, although it’s hard to have a bad time at Fenway, even when the Sox get hammered. Highlights include the gentlemen sitting behind us who were discussing Rays second baseman Akinori Iwamura’s dismal G4 and referred to him as a “Chinaman”, which is wrong on so many levels, meeting the various friends of the Tampa owner who were there, walking around Philadelphia in a Matt Stairs jersey and seeing the most atrocious field conditions I’ve ever seen in the sixth inning of G5, in which the Rays scored to tie the game, which seemingly roused Selig from his torpor and prompted him to suspend the game. With the amount of water on the field and the temperature, we were probably about an inning from seeing Matt Stairs, on skates, inserted as a pinch runner.

I endorse Joe Sheehan’s thoughts on the matter, which essentially boil down to “The sixth inning never should have been played” and the thoughts of an unnamed Phillie, who said “I wouldn’t let Bud Selig supervise one of my shits.” About the only disappointment was that Matt Stairs was in the on-deck circle when G4, an instant classic, ended and that Mick McGeough has apparently taken up umpiring in his retirement.

Notes:

  • This line-up required quite a bit more sheltering than the one from the night prior. With Gagner not on the wing of the Kid Line, MacTavish kept their ice-time against Cammalleri – Conroy – Iginla to a minimum. Bumping Pouliot up the depth chart also meant that the fourth line had both Stortini and MacIntyre, who were kept away from top-tier competition at all cost. Brodziak saw a few extra shifts as a face-off man.
  • Given the extra sheltering, it isn’t at all surprising that the Horcoff line spent better than 80 per cent of the night against the Flames top-six forwards, and it’s even less surprising that MacTavish ran Pisani’s line out against the Iginla line whenever possible.
  • Looking at the defence, it’s quite clear that the by-committee approach will continue for the time being; MacTavish and Co. don’t have a top-tier shutdown defender in the line-up. Strudwick and Staios saw very little time against the Lombardi line; I’d guess that this was done to prevent them from being victimized by the quicker skating forwards (Lombardi and Glencross can both flat out fly, and Moss isn’t a slug by any stretch either).

Scoring chances for/against: Oct 17th: Edm vs Cgy

I am still waiting on the head-to-head looks from that game but even if I don’t wind up posting those, there’s still merit in the whole scoring chances exercise and you can always check out behindthenet.ca to see who’s most likely playing the toughest competition and then you can judge from there. I’m also planning on adding all these up for every 10th game interval and then by comparing those totals vs Qualcomp, you can decide if MacT’s doing a good job running his bench.

Update: Here’s a look at the head-to-head numbers as compiled by Jonathan Willis; there are also some attached notes of his that I figured I’d include as well.
Oilers lines
Cole - Horcoff - Hemsky
Nilsson - Cogliano - Gagner
Moreau - Pisani - Penner
Pouliot - Brodziak

Steve MacIntyre was on the fourth line for just under two minutes, playing only two shifts, so I’ve excluded him from this calculation. It almost goes without saying, but he didn’t see any time against Calgary’s top line.

Visnovsky - Souray
Grebeshkov - Gilbert
Strudwick - Staios

Sheldon Souray only managed a little under eight minutes of even-strength ice-time, so Lubomir Visnovsky played some shifts with other defenceman, averaging a little over two minutes with each.

Calgary’s Lines:

Bertuzzi – Langkow – Iginla
Bourque – Lombardi – Cammalleri
Glencross – Conroy – Moss
Primeau – Boyd

Andre Roy played a little more than Steve MacIntyre, but still played about half as many shifts as Primeau and Boyd. Also, Cammalleri and Bertuzzi switched spots for a couple of shifts.

Sarich/Aucoin - Regehr
Phaneuf – Vandermeer/Giordano

Keenan and Co. did some interesting things with their defence. While Aucoin and Giordano played about half of their ice-time with each other, Regehr double shifted with Aucoin, while Phaneuf did the same with Giordano

Notes:

  • The line match-ups were no where near as rigid as they’ve been in some of the previous games. MacTavish obviously wanted to get his third line out against Iginla, and he also let the Kid Line get their feet wet against quality opposition but did shelter them to some degree.
  • Keenan obviously felt comfortable with either Regehr or Phaneuf out against most everyone, but with Regehr in the 1A role and Phaneuf in the 1B role.
  • Grebeshkov and Gilbert played a lot against the Iginla line, which really isn’t surprising, given Souray’s limited even strength ice-time.

Alan Watt

I haven’t said anything here yet about Dave Berry’s little run-in the other night but, having heard Gregor’s subsequent interview with Alan Watt (Oilers VP of Communications, Broadcasting and Publicity) on his show, I’m finally moved to write something here about all of this that I think is something more than just some online complaining.

First of all, I’m amazed at how far this story has gone, what with it having moved from Covered in Oil, to local media members, to Finland (this link leads to an English translation, such as it is) and now, to Elliot Friedman. The Finnish translation is awesome:

Oilogosphere is a fairly sizeable one thing piled around a new media concentration. Full of potential to express the visibility and interest in Oilers about it - and now harnessing to tell about how clammy man Kevin Lowe is all about.

It was always about making sure that the Finns know the truth.
