First of all, I want to point out Vic’s analogy from a previous comment thread:
Jesus, if Oiler management had been in charge of the space program in the 1960s, Elvis and Rock Hudson would have been designated as the first men to walk on the moon. It wouldn’t have happened though, the cost to sign them would have meant deep cuts in he retro-rocket budget which would probably have lead to a catastrophic explosion in lower space. This would, have course, lead NASA to re-evaluate the whole program … then put the same managers in charge of tearing down the moon landing project and building it up again from scratch.
I read this to someone who knows nothing about hockey or the Oilers other than my various complaints and she laughed out loud. Well done.
There’s been some excitement lately about the return of the Jets to the playoffs. It was hard to envision this happening at the start of the year but it looks like it’s about to happen - a Chicago win in regulation tonight combined with a Calgary loss in regulation and Phoenix clinches a playoff spot. The troubling thing about that, of course, is that the Jets/’Yotes have never won a playoff series against anyone other than Calgary and every Flames’ regulation loss makes the Calgary/Phoenix matchup less likely.
