It’s interesting that the PK was decent. The past few games they’ve been giving up over a chance per minute, but were much better than that last night including the 5v3 time.

Meanwhile the Oilers PP continues to stink to high heaven. Maybe one chance per 3 min PPTOI. That’s awful. The Oilers definitely have an ST coaching problem.

I don’t know what the PK SV PCT is saying but I think the Oilers PK has been good for a long time now; it’s just been weighed down by that first quarter performance.

I know Gregor’s credited it to them coaching staff dropping the diamond approach and there could be something to that.

I did notice the other night that they seemed to fall back into it, though. I counted three chances where there wound up being two guys screening Khabby and not a Dman to be found.

So it was off the rails for that night.

But lately we’ve been a lot better with the two designated pairs of 13/85 and 16/28.

Mind you, I’d still like to see three pairings going forward and for young 91 to be a big part of it.

I’m gonna watch him closely down the stretch just to see where his goals might come from in the future. Thus far I see him shooting a lot of muffins from poor angles or rushing the wing and then dishing off. He doesn’t power to the net and he doesn’t crash for rebounds and I’m trying to figure out where his ultimate value lies.

I love a lot of things he can already do but more and more I’m haunted by him maxing out as a Dvorak. If that’s the case then he has to be used against the other team’s top lines and he has to kill penalties.

and then some year we might find him his Nedved and Havlac.

I’ve been disappointed with the PP most of the year but with essentially the entire first unit out of the equation now and guys like Giroux, Jones and Brule logging major minutes we have to temper our (already-low) expectations. Of course Foster is healthy as a horse but that’s one roll of the UFA dice that has come up snake-eyes.

W.r.t. Paajarvi he seems to be gaining in confidence and more dimensions of his game are in evidence. He still has a ways to go – as Dennis rightly asks, where is he gonna score his goals? – but he has a lot of promise as a multi-faceted player.

Dennis, I saw the same thing you did with the diamond in Philly. It seems to me that these days they are doing more full rotations (90 degrees) of the box and not so many half rotations (45 degrees) which results in the diamond. But you will often find a defenceman up high on the strong side and a forward covering the low post on the weak side, which while not ideal is a hell of a lot better plan than having Nobody in that spot.

Bruce: I was talking about the PK’s performance in Philly;)
