So in the past two weeks, we’ve had big free agent signing Nikolai Khabibulin sentenced to 30 days in prison, expensive senior advisor Pat Quinn acknowledge that he doesn’t really know what he’s going to do this year and now, with $9MM left on his contract, Sheldon Souray has been told to stay away from training camp. I don’t even want to know what we’re going to find out about Dustin Penner. It’s hard to believe that they could have obtained such bad results when they tried but then, when you continuously make stupid bets, sometimes you’re going to have a really bad run.

I would assume that the end game here involves sending Souray to the minors and then recalling him as soon as possible. Nobody was interested in taking him for free, which means that his contract has negative value. That makes him available to claiming teams at $2.25MM in cash and a $2.7MM cap hit, with the Oilers carrying the same on their cap (and writing a cheque for the same amount, too). If they don’t want him on the farm – and I would guess that they don’t – then they’re better off recalling him ASAP, before teams start worrying about the fact that he hasn’t played.

If the consensus in the NHL is that his value is below $2.25MM annually, well, god help the Oilers. My guess is that someone will snap him up at that price but this is still a pretty expensive debacle for the Oilers. Barring a buyout next summer, I don’t really see this having any impact when the Oilers are competitive again, so it’s just Daryl Katz’ money being pissed away, but it emphasizes what a stupid signing this was for the most ineptly run team in the NHL and, presumably, makes them even less viable in Edmonton going forward now that they’re going to take a significant hit on Souray.

Update: According to the Oilers twitter feed, Tambellini told Souray this last week. According to Souray, his agent was informed today. Hilarious, given that Souray’s big complaint was that Tambo is a lousy communicator. It’s hard to imagine a more shambolic franchise.

Katz will spend $2.25MM to not have Souray poison impressionable young minds before the Oilers can, but according to LaForge/Lowe since they lost $3MM last year we must lose $200MM as a city to keep them here.

I wonder what the fans/city would pay for LaForge/Lowe to leave the team?

This makes me feel better about the news today that Sutter apparently offered Toskala $1M+ to be the Flames back-up this year.

I would welcome relocation to Hamilton as joyous euthanasia.

If there’s a collection, I’ll put in $20 toward not having Lowe ‘poison impressionable young minds’.

Sheldon Souray — Distraction that needs to be kept away from our youth because… he might teach them to hate their awful management and not needlessly ruin their careers playing through injury.

Nikolai Khabibulin — Convicted of a DUI, welcomed back with open arms, presumably told to use one of the rookies as a DD going forward.

I’ll be damned if I understand locker rooms.

Devan Dubnyk = DD = Designated Driver

Huge bonus points for use of the word “shambolic”.

Quaim, We stil haven’t really heard how they are going to deal with Khabbiboozin.

Travis, safe to assume it’s probably not going to be “stay away from training camp, you’re a bad example.” Even if Souray’s just a whiner and NK’s been convicted of a criminal offense*. 44 embarrassed the organization, 35 just embarrassed himself. One of those is forgivable.

35 didn’t “just embarrass himself.” That would have happened if he’s made stupid Twitter posts or taken nude photos of himself while drunk. He drove car while he was way, way, way over the legal limit. That should embarrass the organization, but it also put the lives of innocent people at risk. Drunk drivers suck.

Matt, from the perspective of the team, that’s “all” he did. From a societal and personal perspective, I agree, but the Oilers have made it pretty clear by words and actions/omission of action that as an organisation they don’t much care about personal embarrassments (see Moreau, Ethan) or societal ones either.

      Trade Souray for Martin Hanzal.

Considering that Souray has flipped and flopped on everything that has ever come out of his mouth (take the initial contract signing for istance – he said the Oilers came out of no where and offered more money, later said that he gave up higher offers to play in Edmonton), I wouldn’t believe anything that comes out of his mouth regarding management.
