Thanks Dennis. Have you ever compared your notes to what NHL publishes on their play-by-play for the game? Is their play-by-play done by the shotkeeper/scorekeeper at each home arena? I was about to suggest that if they compared relatively well, it might save you from having to do this every game, but then if a different scorekeepers are noting every game, then yeah, you’re stuck if you want anything consistent ;-).

Anyways, was just trying to figure out the discrepancy in the numbers between 41 & 43, since they were partners. From the NHL game log, looks like it was mostly 43 getting stuck out there briefly during a line change with 77 or 71 (during which good things tended to happen), while 41 occasionally got stuck out there with 5 (during which bad things tended to happen). I’m certainly glad that 5 has come such a long way, but he’s still a long way from being able to hold up a pairing on his own.

Um, guys… Do you know if Vic ferrari still answers to his Timeonice e-mail? There is a bug with the scoring chances app for games at the Bell Center (my guess is something with the fact the scoresheets are in two languages; é à ô are a bitch for many scripting systems) and, well, it’s kinda holding me back…

Olivier, I’ll send him something. As long as you keep tracking the chances, you’ll be able to scrape the data later.

Hey Dennis, I know you only count SCs when a shot is attempted, but shouldn’t Horcoff’s fumbled breakaway at the beginning of the 2nd (just after O’Sullivan’s goal) count as a scoring chance? I mean, he didn’t get a shot off, but it was a in-alone breakaway, surely that be a situation where you might reasonably expect a goal to occur. If the point of the exercise to measure defensive breakdowns and offensive chances created, a breakaway where there’s no shot attempted surely indicates someone on one side fucked up and somoeone on the other side generated something good. No?

Interesting that 3 of the 4 guys with a positive scoring chance differential at evens are Plumber Bob types — Jacques, Stortini, Strudwick. Not a great night for the skill guys, who were having lots of trouble in our end.

I would say that was all about the matchups, Bruce. That should tell us we have more depth in the bottom 6 than the Canucks.

William: Yes, I make notes while I’m watching the game and then I double-check to see if the shot attempt was blocked or not. If it was, then it’s not a chance.

Julien: Personally, I draw the line at anytime when a shot isn’t attempted. I can see the merit in what you’re saying but I didn’t count 10′s play as a chance because he didn’t even get a shot off so no shot attempt means no chance of a goal.

Bruce: The Oilers are getting outchanced as a team and the 10-83 combo just haven’t been any great shakes this season. Is it because one or both were hurt early in the season? Is it because they need a LW to compliment them, I don’t know really know.

Dennis: Judging from the above, there’s no way 10 & 83 can hang the blame on 22 last night. JFJ was +2, Horcoff -2, Hemsky -3. In fairness, Hemsky was clearly dragging his butt, and I have no idea why Quinn played him so much down the stretch (5:04 of the last 9:27). Accounting for the illness and the Brule emergency, I’m inclined to give Ales a pass for what I would ordinarily judge a fairly poor performance.
