I know that the icetime got leveled as a function of the big lead, but that’s a pretty interesting distribution at evens.

      Observations:
      1) coaches have realized what a treasure 71 is — and that PK is not his top skill
      2) 2 naked models and a caveman — good night for them

Dennis, this is certainly an impressive and likely time-consuming endeavor. Great work!

Have you considered pooling the Oilers’ data to create a database so that scoring chances for – against could be accessed to track players somewhat like Corsi/GF-GA differential on behindthenet?

NFB: Yeah, probably not the best time to draw conclusions on TOI give the breadth of the lead but a little thing I took from tonight’s game was just how much 18′s becoming marginalized.

His primary job at this point would be on the PK and whomever’s running the PK is basically running the pairs of 10-27 and 19-32.

I’m not sure how much you can trust in 34 being healthy for a whole season and you don’t want to totally strip out your depth but if 18′s no more than a secondary PKer, it might be a good idea to try and get rid of that salary so that you can have some money to play with for a possible rental.

Greg: check the Gospel of Hockey blog; Scott’s in charge over there and he usually posts a running tally every 10 games.

“…it might be a good idea to try and get rid of Moreau’s salary so that you can have some money to play with for a possible rental.”

Very diplomatically stated Dennis. It almost doesn’t need to be said but, I agree.

And yes, I am planning on doing a running tally every ten games. I also really appreciate you keeping the game numbers in each post (even though I don’t do it in mine…) since by the end of the year we should have 13 games for each team in the Western Conference which is something we can work with a little bit going forward. Not ideal and it’s even worse for the East (which I won’t bother doing) but it will be interesting to see if we can find any consistent patterns.

Dennis, did you do this for the first 5 games of last season?

I only ask because despite all this new found optimism in Oiler land, they still seem to be getting out shot and out chanced at a very similar level to last year… the main difference being that last year they relied on a ridiculous save % while this year it’s a ridiculous shooting %.

Scott: Maybe the picture’s changed with the news that 78′s gone until ~Jan but it still might be a good move to get rid of 18 just to change some of the culture around the team. Not even taking into account that his role’s lessening is the fact that he takes none of the blame with the club loses or mistakes are made. Personally, that’s not a guy I’d want to the kids looking up to.

DB: Yeah, I did the first five games for last season and I guess you can find them by going through Ty’s Oct ’08 archives. They will be a bit hard to read, though, because I wasn’t using tables to cipher all the data; that only came once Vic stepped in with his handy counting tool:)

I believe that right now the club is a collective -8 in term’s of SC’s at evens and -7 on ST.

So, yeah, the numbers don’t support the record but it is a small sample size thus far.
