As I said over at both LT’s site and the other place;), this wasn’t really a poor effort. Sure, not everyone was kicking ass but enough guys were doing the job that a win was well within their grasp.

I had the club outchancing the Preds 24-19 and an more impressive 23-13 at EV. I don’t care if it is a home game, it’s an accomplishment to outchance anyone by 10 or more so in hindsight I really can’t damn the club for this effort.

      The problems were as follows:

      - they got nothing done on the PP. I had them creating just the one chance while allowing one as well so anytime the PP finishes at just even when it comes to chances for/against, there’s a very real possibility that if you won the game it came from EV play.

      - Rinne made many great saves — efforts on first period shots from all of 10-51-12 spring to mind – and while Roli stopped all or wasn’t victimized on his five STCA – special teams change against – he managed to allow two goals on 13 EV chances while Rinne was good on all but one of the 23 he faced.

Odds and ends: Maybe some intrepid reporter can dig this up but I dare say 83 holds the early record for being on the ice for the most EV chances for in a game. He went 14/6 so basically the Oil without 83 on the ice were 9/7. That’s what you call making a difference.

Another so-so night for the third pairing as their numbers graded the lowest. But, they, they’re the last option for a reason. On the bright side, this metric is just two games old;) but 5 set a personal best by having two scoring chances in the one game! I’m not joking by saying I’d give 2/1 odds that this has never happened before in his career. So, he’s got that going for him.

18 had three scoring chances created, which is impressive, but he still only manages to finish even on a night when his team posts a +10 for the game. If I continue to log these chances season after season, it will be interesting to see how long it takes before someone else inherits the luck that has befallen our clueless leader during the ’09 season.

Just to close, I just read that 51 was bag-skated today and for the life of me I can’t figure out why. I’ve just finished re-watching yesterday’s game and so I can tell you that all of his chances were of the high percentage variety. In the first period he sneaked into the left slot to attempt to finish off a 43 cycle, during the second period he first slid to the right of Rinne before being robbed at the goalmouth and later on in that frame he chipped the puck over the empty net after collecting a rebound. The kid finished 7/2 by my eye and yet he’s signaled out.

I missed this one but it’s good to see the LT group lost their collective mind over a scoring chance beating.

If the Oilers stomp the other team in chances AND Hemsky’s out there for most of them, they probably did some things right and will win 90% of those games.

As for the “bag skate” in question, we have a clear MSM contradiction here don’t we?

Riv: Yeah, if you play this game again four times than I’ll bet the Oilers win it three times.

I was upset at the end but it was just the emotion and then I began to think about it and I thought that once I scored the game, I’d know which way the wind was blowing.

And, yes, it looks like the event was less than a bag skate but even in saying that I don’t know how you could single out 51 for anything negative after this game.

The curse of the backup tenders remains, I see.

Dennis, thanks a lot for doing this once again. I missed the game and these summaries honestly offer a very good overview of how things went down.

Also, I posted the home and road splits for the first half of the season (click on my name). The ten game segments are there as well. If you have any other requests as far as parsing the data goes let me know and I’ll probably be able to throw it together.

I too was pissed at game’s end, cuz those games where Oilers are clearly the better team and lose anyway are tough to take. Rinne played great, Roli let in one soft one, and the PP sucked ass on 3 opps which is one thing I’m still pissed about. Rinne was beating us and then he bashed Cogs in the face gifting Oilers a PP in the last 8 minutes, and they’re so fired up by that their desire to stick it to him that they can’t get the puck over the fucking blueline? An epic fail.

If Brodziak went +7/-2 in a game when he lined up with Strudwick and Reddox I’m giving him a raise, not a kick in the ass. But the supposed “bag skate” may have been a tad overblown.

Dennis, I counted scoring chances myself on this one, and had it at 28-19 for the Oil (probably counted a few more of Ethan Moreau’s shot as chances than you did).

Hemsky and Cole were the main positive drivers of the scoring chances, while Gilbert was the main culprit.

David: I’m gonna give Roli more heat over the first goal than I would 77.
